The Gustavus men’s hockey team jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back as the Gusties opened their 2007-08 season with a convincing 7-0 win at Lake Forest College. Junior forward Mike Carr (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored two goals (the first goals of his collegiate career) and freshman goaltender John Swartout (Fr., St. Louis Park, Minn.) made his first collegiate game one to remember as he picked up the win and recorded a shutout.
Sophomore transfer Patrick Dynan (So., Maple Plain,Minn.) gave the Gusties a 1-0 lead with a power play goal at the 4:31 mark of the first period. Assists were recorded by Josh Pauer (So., Spring Park, Minn.) and David Martinson (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.). Carr would extend the Gusties lead to 3-0 with the first two goals of his collegiate career. The first came at the 14:20 mark and the second came shortly after at 17:29 of the first period. James Leathers (Prior Lake, Minn./Blake) assisted on Carr’s first goal and Tim Ornell (Sr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) picked up the assist on Carr’s second goal. Gustavus led 3-0 after the first 20 minutes.
The score remained 3-0 for most of the second period,however the Gusties tallied two goals in the final four minutes of the period to push the lead to 5-0. Josh Pauer scored an even strength goal at the 16:22 mark and then Brad Wieck (Fr., Shoreview, Minn.) scored a short-handed goal at the 19:59 mark. Gustavus led 5-0 after two periods.
Eric Bigham (So., St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored at the 11:11 mark of the third period to make the score 6-0 and then David Martinson, a sophomore transfer from the Air Force Academy, closed out the scoring with just under a minute to play in the game (19:11).
Gustavus out-shot Lake Forest 44-20 in the game. Swartout turned in a very solid effort between the pipes making 20 saves. Scott Campbell made 37 saves for the Foresters.
The Gusties will travel to DePere, Wis. for a game against #2 ranked St. Norbert College tomorrow night at 7:05 pm.
