Gustavus Set to Induct Eight New Members into Athletics Hall of Fame On Saturday Posted on November 2nd, 2007 by

The Gustavus Adolphus College Athletics Department has chosen eight individuals for induction into its Athletics Hall of Fame. The 2007 inductees include Tim DeJarlais ’91 (Golf), John Erickson ’81 (Hockey, Soccer), Dave Hultgren ’92 (Baseball), Craig Miller ’91 (Cross Country, Track and Field), Mindy Mayerchak Oosten ’88 (Soccer, Softball), Mike Schumacher ’91 (Football), Ryan Skanse ’92 (Tennis), and Ann Sommerness Simms ’92 (Swimming).

This group will be honored at the Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, which will be held in Alumni Hall at 6:00 pm on Saturday, November 3, following the Hall of Fame football game against Concordia at 1:00 p.m.

Individuals eligible for induction into the Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame are athletes, coaches, and benefactors. Selection of athletes is based on athletic achievements while a student at Gustavus. All of the members of the Gustavus Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2007 will be inducted for their accomplishments as athletes.

Tim DeJarlais, a native of Robbinsdale, Minnesota, was a three-time All-America performer on the golf team from 1989 to 1991. He finished second individually at the 1990 NCAA Championships and helped the team to a second place finish; John Erickson, a native of Duluth, Minnesota, was a two-time All-America forward for the hockey team. He finished his career as the 10th leading scorer in the program’s history with 65 goals and 50 assists for 115 points. He was also an all-conference forward on the soccer team; Dave Hultgren, a native of Arlington, Minnesota, was a three-time all-conference catcher on the baseball team, who won the MIAC batting title with a .543 average in 1992. He graduated as the second leading hitter in the program’s history with a career batting average of .390; Craig Miller, a native of Willmar, Minnesota, won the MIAC Individual Cross Country title in 1990 (the first ever at Gustavus) and went on to finish seventh at the NCAA Championships to become the first Cross Country All-American in the program’s history. He was also a ten-time all-conference performer in indoor and outdoor track and field; Mindy Mayerchak Oosten, a native of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was a three-year starter in soccer as a goalkeeper and a four-year starter in softball as an outfielder. She was an all-conference selection in her sophomore and senior seasons in softball, while earning all-conference honors in soccer her senior year; Mike Schumacher, a native of Wayzata, Minnesota, was a standout running back for the football team in the late ’80s. He led the MIAC in rushing in his freshman year (1987) with 873 yards and helped the Gusties claim the league title with a 10-0 record. Schumacher finished his career as the second leading rusher in the program’s history with 3,236 yards; Ryan Skanse, a native of Bloomington, Minnesota, won the NCAA Doubles Title with partner Dave Jussila in 1991 and went on to finish second in singles at the NCAA Championships in 1992. The three-time All-America tennis player finished his career with a record of 80-38 in singles and 81-25 in doubles; Ann Sommerness Simms, a native of Duluth, Minnesota, was the first female swimmer at Gustavus to qualify for the NCAA Championships three times (1989, 1990, 1991). She broke four-school records in her three-year career including the 100 freestyle (:56.45), the 100 backstroke (1:02.38), the 200 backstroke (2:15.20) and the 200 individual medley (2:16.37).

The selection of the inductees to the Gustavus Hall of Fame is made by the Gustavus Hall of Fame Board which is an 11-member group consisting of current athletic administrators, and former coaches and alumni.
