Gustavus Adolphus freshman swimmer Tommy Panetti (Bloomington, Minn.) has been named MIAC Men’s Swimming & Diving Athlete-of-the-Week for his outstanding performance at the MIAC Invitational held on the campus of the University of St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 11. Panetti saved his best performance of the season for last, picking up three event wins with season-best times, and breaking one pool record along the way.
Panetti dominated the distance races with wins in both the 500 and 1,650 free. The rookie touched the wall in 4:51.62 in the 500 free and 17:01.11 in the 1650. He defeated the second place finisher from St. Thomas by over :50 seconds in the 1,650.
In the 400 individual medley, Panetti recorded a time of 4:28.27, setting the pool record and winning the race by more than :10 seconds. All three of the Bloomington, Minn. native’s times rank in the Top-10 in the MIAC this season. His mark in the 1,650 free ranks third, while his 500 free and 400 IM times both rank 10th.
The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving team will take part in the 2012 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships held Feb. 16-18 in the Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota. There will be two sessions each day, with preliminaries in the morning at 10:30 a.m. and finals each evening at 6:30 p.m. All six sessions will be broadcast live by the MIAC and Webcast America.
