The Gustavus Adolphus College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Meet of the UnSaintly hosted by Hamline University Friday evening in St. Paul. In a field dominated by athletes from the University of Minnesota, Andy Klaers (discus), Sari Lindeman (triple jump), Aryn Bell (100 hurdles) and Lisa Brown (javelin throw) picked up individual wins for Gustavus. This was the team’s final competiton before this weekend’s MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Collegeville.
Gustavus Adolphus men
As has been the case all season, the Gusties were strong in the field events. Klaers (Sr., Loretto, Minn./Delano) captured the discus throw with a heave of 145 feet, 10 inches, while teammate Luke Weyandt (Sr., Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) took second with a throw of 134-1. Klaers also seventh in the hammer throw (156-1) and Weyandt finished third in the javelin throw (142-9). Brian Anderson (Fr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) added a fourth in the javelin (130-7) and an eighth-place finish in the shot put (45-3 1/2), while Nick Davis (Fr., Litchfield, Minn.) placed seventh in the discus (122-10).
Collin Rust (Fr., Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) posted a fifth-place finish in the triple jump (37-5 3/4) and a ninth in the long jump (17-8), nine inches back of Aaron Gibson (Fr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) who took eighth with a long jump of 18-5. Gibson also finished fifth in the 100 (11.80) and ninth in the 200 (23.77).
In the hurdles, Tanner Miest (Sr., Willmar, Minn./New London-Spicer) and Tyler Geyen (So., Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) finished 2-3 in the 110 hurdles behind Minnesota’s Luke Silovich. Geyen also placed third in the 400 hurdles (56.97) just ahead of Eric Anderson (Sr., Southlake, Texas/Carroll) in sixth (58.49).
Elsewhere in the sprints, Cole Carlson (Fr., Mora, Minn.) took sixth in the 200 (23.53) and 11th in the 400 (50.43), Ben Treichel (Jr., Webster, Wis.) placed seventh in the 200 (23.60) and was ninth in the 400 (49.64), the first non-University of Minnesota athlete across the line. In the longer distance races, Dan Freeman (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley) placed fourth in the 3000 steeplechase (10:46.60), Jake Fourre (Fr., Corcoran, Minn./Buffalo) took fifth in the 800 (1:56.57), Collin Meierbachtol (Sr., Northfield, Minn.) finished eighth in the 1500 (4:14.37), and Chris deLaubenfels (Jr., Mount Vernon, Iowa/Mount Vernon) placed eighth in the 5000 (16:03.80).
Gustavus Adolphus women
Lisa Brown (So., Lake Crystal, Minn./Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial) captured the win in the javelin throw with a season-best heave of 149-9. That throw ranks her fourth in Division III as of May 7. Brown also placed fifth in the shot put (38-7 3/4) and 11th in the discus throw (97-9). Anna Bauer (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) took sixth in both the discus (107-6) and the hammer throws (124-2).
Sari Lindeman (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) won the triple jump with a leap of 36-6 1/4 while also finishing second in the long jump with a 16-10 1/2 effort. Laura Lynch (So., Waunakee, Wis.) took fifth in the triple jump (34-1 1/2) and eighth in the long jump (14-4 1/2), while Lindsey TeBrake (So., Shakopee, Minn.) placed fifth in the high jump (5-1/4) and sixth in the triple jump (30-4 1/4).
Janna Castellano (Sr., Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) tied for third in the pole vault after clearing 12-1/2, missing her own school record by one inch. Shanna Dawson (Jr., Fairmont, Minn.) took sixth after posting a height of 11-3/4.
On the track, the Gustavus women picked up a first-place finish from Aryn Bell (So., Eden Prairie, Minn.) in the 100 hurdles. Bell posted a time of 15.97 in preliminaries and then ran a time of 16.14 in the final.
Elizabeth Pringle (So., Northfield, Minn.) took second place in the 400 (1:00.55) and also finished ninth in the 200 (28.44). Linda Kanne (So., Franklin, Minn./Cedar Mountain) took third in the 200 (27.26), while Kate Sidlo (Fy., Osseo, Minn.) posted a fifth-place finish in the 400 (1:04.49). Gustavus also picked up third place finishes from Funto Okanla (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Arlington) in the 100 (13.34) and Jill Fagerstrom (So., Rosemount, Minn.) in the 5000 (18:42.80). Also, Kelsey Becker (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) took sixth in the 100 with a time of 13.65 seconds.
MIAC Multi-Events
The Gustavus track and field teams sent three competitors to the MIAC Multi-Event Championships held Thursday-Friday, May 4-5 at Carleton College in Northfield. Drew Hood (Jr., Mankato, Minn./West) took seventh in the decathlon with 5598 points after posting the best effort in the pole vault (14-1 1/4) and the second-best effort in the javelin throw (145-11). Hood eight points out of sixth place and 24 points out of fifth.
In the heptathlon, Becca Bryson (Fy., Alden, Minn./Alden-Conger) finished eighth and Kaelene Lundstrum (Fy., Bird Island, Minn./BOLD) took ninth. Bryson posted the second-best efforts in the shot put (33-2) and the 200 (27.80) during the competition to finish with 3743 points. Lundstrum finished with 3426 points despite not recording a distance in the shot put, perhaps her best event. Lundstrum has a season-best effort of 39-11 1/4 in the shot put, while an effort matching that of heptathlon shot put champion Dana Luiken (34-4 3/4) would have vaulted Lundstrum to within five points of Concordia’s Kaitlin Anderson in fifth place.
