The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team completed a weekend sweep of St. Olaf with a 6-3 win Saturday in Northfield. Jessie Doig (So., New Prague, Minn./New Prague) scored two goals, including the game-winner, and an assist to lead the Gusties, who improve to 13-1-0 overall, 8-0-0 in the MIAC.

The Oles got on the board early on their home ice as Tessa Christensen scored an unassisted goal just 1:49 into the game to give St. Olaf the early 1-0 lead. Gustavus responded midway through the period as Jenna Johnson (Fy., Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) snuck the puck past Ole netminder Shannon Herrick at the 10:39 mark for her second goal of the season. Margaret Dorer (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./St. Anthony) and Molly Doyle (Jr., Eagan, Minn./Eagan) were credited with assists on the play.

St. Olaf went back out in front at the 14:51 mark of the first period, taking advantage of a tripping penalty by Andrea Peterson to score with the extra skater. Laura Wild notched a power-play goal off assists from Susannah Brokl and Lindsey Boeser. The Gusties evened the score just prior to the first intermission as Jenny Pusch (So., Minneapolis, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) scored a power-play goal of her own off assists from Kelly Crandall (Sr., Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Andrea Peterson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake).

Doig notched both of her goals in the second period, giving the Gusties a 4-2 lead. The first came 5:59 into the period off assists from Pusch and Stefanie Ubl (Jr., Blaine, Minn./Blaine), while the second came at the 12:44 mark off assists from Crandall and Liz Haakinson (So., Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead).

Lindsey Boeser cut the lead back to a goal at 4-3 with a breakaway goal at the 16:24 mark of the second period. Kari McClintick was given an assist on the play.

Early in the third period, the Oles had two other breakaway chances broken up at the last minute by Gustavus defenders. Janae Fabini seemed to have an excellent chance heads-up against Gustie goalie Sarah Windhorst (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret’s), but the puck was poked away at the last second by a diving Kelly Crandall. McClintick also had the puck poked away while on a breakaway opportunity.

Gustavus extended its lead to 5-3 at the 8:59 mark of the third period when Claire Opsahl scored a goal on a shot from above the circle to the right of Herrick. The shot deflected off one of Herrick’s pad before making its way into the net. Doig was credited with an assist on the goal.

The Gusties shut the door on any hopes of an Ole comeback with 3:39 left to play when Ubl recorded an empty-net goal to make the score 6-3. Ubl won a sprint with McClintick and poking it away from the Ole forward and into the net.

Windhorst made 13 saves and recorded the win in net for the Gusties, while Herrick made 28 saves. The Gusties outshot the Oles 34-16 and were 1-of-5 on the power-play. St. Olaf was 1-for-8 in chances with the extra skater.

With two assists, Kelly Crandall moved past Noelle Skalko (1997-2001) for third place on Gustavus’ career assists list with 68. She also moved past Katie Deschneau (2000-04) into sixth place on the school’s career points list with 112.

Molly Doyle moved past Ann Katz (2001-04) and into a tie for 10th place on the career points list with 86 points. Margaret Dorer tied current Gustavus assistant coach Abby Randall for 16th place on the career points list with 73 and moved to within one assist of Randall for eighth place on the career assists list with 51.

Gustavus will face Bethel (5-6-2, 4-2-2 MIAC) next weekend (Jan. 26-27) in a home-and-home series.
