Nordic Skiing Tackles Freestyle Race at Mt. Itasca Posted on January 21st, 2007 by

The Gustavus Adolphus Nordic skiing team closed out its weekend at the NorAm SuperTour/NCAA Qualifier at Mt. Itasca Ski Area near Coleraine, Minn., by competing in Sunday’s freestyle races. Kelly Chaudoin (So., Ely, Minn./Memorial) finished 19th overall in the 10-kilometer women’s race to lead the Gusties, while Scott Kyser (Sr., St. Paul, Minn./Highland Park) was the highest Gustavus finisher in the 15-kilometer men’s race in 71st place.

On the women’s side, the Gusties were led by Chaudoin’s 19th place overall finish. Chaudoin’s time of 29:05.5 also ranked 11th among collegiate skiers. Closely behind Chaudoin were Laura Edlund (Jr., Forest Lake, Minn.) and Sarah Willis (Jr., Willmar, Minn.). Edlund finished 15th among collegiate skiers (24th overall) with a time of 29:41.3, while Willis finished 18th among collegiate skiers (27th overall) with a 29:47.3 clocking. Junior Kathleen DeWahl (34th overall; 30:44.5), senior Ritva Taipale (36th overall; 31:03.7), and sophomores Kathryn Ladig (42nd overall; 31:27.7) and Allison Bohn (49th overall; 32:32.5) also competed for the Gusties.

Kyser was the first Gustie across the line in the 15-kilometer men’s race, finishing in 71st place overall with a time of 43:07.0. Kyser’s time was 30th best among collegiate racers. Elias Anoszko (Jr., Dousman, Wis./Kettle Moraine) finished five spots back of Kyser in 76th with a time of 43:38.6. Anoszko was 33rd among collegiate skiers. Freshmen Michael Paulson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and Mark Hartman (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake) rounded out the Gustavus men’s competitors. Paulson finished 39th among collegiate skiers (86th overall) with a time of 44:25.4, while Hartman finished 53rd among collegians (123rd overall) with a 47:01.1 clocking.

The Gusties will compete in another NorAm SuperTour/NCAA Qualifier next weekend (Jan. 27-28) at Telemark Lodge in Cable, Wis.
