Softball Earns Sweep At Carleton

The Gustavus softball team swept Carleton 13-4 and 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Northfield, Minn. Kate Rentschler and Erin Truebenbach both got wins on the hill, while Kirsten Prunty broke out with a 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI day. Gustavus improves to 15-9 overall and 8-0 in the MIAC.

The Gustavus softball team extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games by sweeping Carleton on Wednesday afternoon in Northfield, Minn.  The Gusties recorded 15 hits, matching their season-high, in a 13-4 victory in game one before winning 8-1 in game two.  The Gusties remain unbeaten in the MIAC, improving to 8-0 in league play and 15-9 overall.  Carleton falls to 5-7 in the MIAC and 10-18 overall.

Kirsten Prunty, who entered the game hitting .231, broke out of her slump, going 5-for-6 with three runs and three RBI on the day.  Dani Cattrysse was 5-for-8 with two runs and three RBI, and Emily Wendorff went 5-for-9 with a run and four RBI.

Kate Rentschler got the win on the hill in game one, pitching all five innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on eight hits.  After a pair of rough innings in the first and second in which she gave up all four Carleton runs on seven hits, Rentschler was able to settle down, allowing just one hit in the remaining innings for the victory.   She improves to 11-6 on the season with the win.

With the scored tied 4-4 after two complete innings in game one, the Gusties broke the game open with two runs in the third and seven runs in the fourth.  Prunty drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run in the third inning before Gustavus lit up the scoreboard with seven hits in the fourth.

Wendorff went 3-for-4 with a double and a season-high three RBI in the game.  Both Prunty and Ulmen were 2-for-2, as Prunty scored two runs and knocked in another two, and Ulmen scored three runs while plating another.

After the Knights took a 1-0 lead after the first inning of game two, Gustavus responded with five runs in the top of the second to take a 5-1 lead.  The Gusties recorded five hits while taking advantage of three Knight errors in the inning.  Lisa Klass, Wendorff, and Dattrysse all recorded an RBI in the inning.  Cattrysse would finish the game 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a run and two RBI.

The Gusties added three more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-1 edge.  Cattrysse doubled to bring in Jenny Ewert, and Prunty singled to score Cattrysse in the inning.

Erin Truebenbach notched her second consecutive complete game performance in the win.  Truebenbach gave up one run on four hits, striking out a season-high 11 batters without walking one.  She improves 4-2 on the season and drops her ERA to 3.89.

The Gustavus softball team will return to St. Peter for a doubleheader against Augsburg Saturday, April 16.  First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m.   The doubleheader is designated as Parent and Alumni Day at the Gustie Softball Field.
