Men’s Swimming & Diving Defeats Carleton 157-143

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving came away with a big dual victory over Carleton 157-143 on Friday night in Northfield, Minn. Whitaker Davis led the Gusties with wins in the 200 fly, 200 free, and 200 IM.

Whitaker Davis recorded individual victories in the 200 fly, 200 free, and 200 IM at the meet.

The Gustavus men’s swimming and diving came away with a big dual victory over Carleton 157-143 on Friday night in Northfield, Minn.  The Gusties picked up seven individual event wins and one relay victory on their way to besting the Knights.  Whitaker Davis led the Gusties with his second straight three-win meet of the calendar year by taking first in the 200 butterfly, 200 freestyle, and 200 IM.

Davis continued on the path of dominant swimming by earning the Gusties 27 points at the meet.  His first place times included a 2:03.78 in the 200 fly, a 1:44.74 in the 200 free, and a 2:02.77 in the 200 IM.

Billy Schultze and John Rice also contributed big points for the Gusties with four wins and a second place finish between the pair.  Schultze won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:01.10 and 2:14.09, respectively.  He also was runner-up in the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.35.  Rice had a great night in the freestyle distance races by winning the 500 with a mark of 4:57.86 and the 1000 in 10:16.55.

Elliot Hoekstra, Paul Kirihara, and Sam Hanson all supplied a pair of second place finishes in the meet.  Hoekstra was runner-up in the 100 (1:04.12) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.70).  Kirihara earned eight points in the backstroke races by going 54.78 in the 100 and 2:01.87 in the 200.  Hanson was the top Gustavus diver of the meet, taking second in both the one-meter (209.75) and three-meter (200.15).

Second place finishers also included Sam DeFranco in the 50 free (22.25) and Wes Jones in the 1000 free (10:34.47).

Ben Stewart (200 free), Guannar Teigen (1000 free), John Gerritsen (1 mtr dive), and Matt Van Fossen (100 fly) all placed third in their respected events.

The Gustavus 200 medley relay team took first place with a time of 1:38.81, while the 200 free relay squad finished runner-up in 1:30.89.

The Gustavus swimming and diving team will next travel to Grinnell, Iowa on Jan. 21-22 to take part in the Grinnell Invite.
