The Gustavus women’s softball team defeated Bethel University 4-0 and 11-1 in Arden Hills, Minn. on Saturday to extend its MIAC win streak to seven games. The Gusties were led by first year shortstop Rachel Click who went 5-for-6 and drove in six runs in the two games. The Gusties are now 13-5 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC.
In game one, the Gusties scored single runs in the first and third innings to take a 2-0. Audrey Lenoch drove in Julie Mahre with a single in the first and Rachel Click drove in Allison Haase with a single in the third. Those would be the only runs the Gusties would need as Joyce DeWitz limited the Royals to two hits in seven innings and did not allow a run. DeWitz, who picked up her second shutout of the season, walked four and struck out six.
In game two, Gustavus exploded for 10 runs in the first inning on its way to an 11-1 win in five innings. Julie Mahre hit a double and a triple in the inning, while Rachel Click hit a single and a double and drove in three runs. The Gusties were shut out in the second, third, and fourth innings, but then scored a single run in the top of the fifth when Allie Morem singled to drive in Whitney Bartolo with two outs. Bree Lindenberg picked up the win on the mound as she limited Bethel to three hits and one earned run in four innings of work. Sarah Manke came in for Lindenberg in the bottom of the fifth inning and put Bethel down in order to close out the 10-run win for the Gusties.
Top hitters for Gustavus included Click (5-for-6 with six rbi), Mahre (3-for-6, 3 runs scored), and Mary Furlong (2-for-5, 3 runs scored).
