Softball Posts Convincing Sweep Against St. Catherine

The Gustavus softball team posted a convincing doubleheader sweep of St. Catherine on Thursday afternoon by the scores of 15-1 and 12-0. The Gusties pounded out 28 hits and scored 27 runs in the two games, while allowing only four hits and one run.

The Gustavus softball team posted a convincing doubleheader sweep of St. Catherine on Thursday afternoon by the scores of 15-1 and 12-0.  The Gusties pounded out 28 hits and scored 27 runs in the two games, while allowing only four hits and one run.  Emily Wendorff led the offensive fireworks with five hits in five at-bats with two triples, Lisa Klass was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two triples.  Betsie Collins was the winning pitcher in game won, while Callie Nelsen picked up the win on the mound in game two.

In the first game, Gustavus scored four runs in each of the first and second innings and then added six more in the third inning and led 14-1 after three innings of play.  Dani Cattrysse, Jenna Johnson, Emily Wendorff, Kirsten Prunty, and Jenny Ewert all registered two hits.  Johnson and Ewert drove in three runs each.  Betsie Collins pitched four innings allowing three hits and one earned run with six strikeouts. Erin Truebenbach pitched the fifth inning striking out two of the three batters she faced.

In the second game, the Gusties scored three times in the first inning and then exploded for eight runs in the second inning.  In the eight-run second inning, Gustavus pounded out eight hits including a double and a triple by Lisa Klass.  Klass was 3-for-3 in the five-inning game including two doubles and a triple.  Emily Wendorff was also 3-for-3 in the game, while Kirsten Prunty and Andrea Brown registered two hits.  Callie Nelson picked up the win on the mound as she allowed one hit and no runs in four innings of work.  Kate Rentschler pitched the fifth inning striking out two of the three batters she faced.

Gustavus improved to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in MIAC play. The Gusties will travel to Hamline for a conference doubleheader on Saturday.
