Men’s Track & Field Set to Compete at MIAC Championships

The Gustavus men’s track and the field is set to compete in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Macalester College will host the conference meet on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14 in St. Paul, Minn.

Sophomore Tanner Miest (New Londond, Minn.) is the top seed in the 110-meter hurldes. Miest recorded a time of 14.95 in the 110-meter hurdles, which is five hundredths of second behind the NCAA Provisional qualifying time (14.90).

Sophomore Jered Hokenson (Watertown, Minn.) is the top seed in the high jump. Hokenson cleared a height of 6-8 this spring to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. Clearing the height of 6-8 also tied a 40-year old school record.

Junior sprinter Jack Henkemeyer (Plymouth, Minn.) is expected to secure valuable points for the Gusties in the 100 and 200-meter dash. Henkemeyer is the number two seed in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.92. In the 200-meter dash, the junior is seeded third with a time of 22.08.

In the distance races, seniors James Sorenson (Hastings, Minn.) and Tom Westlund (Northfield, Minn.) are seeded in the top five in two different events. Sorenson is seeded fourth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.59. Westlund recorded a time of 9:51.4 in the 3,000-meter run, which is the fourth fastest time in the conference this season.

In the throws, Gustavus holds two of the top three spots in the discus throw. Senior Alex Kestly (Chisholm, Minn.) is seeded second with a distance of 154-9, while sophomore Andy Klaers (Delano, Minn.) holds the third spot with a distance of 153-11. Kestly is also seeded fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 162-2.

The conference meet will begin on Friday, May 13 at 4:00 p.m. with field events. The prelims for the running events will begin at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, May 14 the field events will begin at 4:00 p.m. and the finals for the running events will begin at 5:15 p.m.
