The Gustavus men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the 2005 indoor season with a triangular meet in the Lund Center Fieldhouse. Joining Gustavus at the meet were Macalester and Martin Luther. There were no team scores kept.
The men’s team recorded eight first place finishes in the meet. Jered Hokenson, a junior transfer making his first appearance for the Gusties finished first and set the school record in the high jump with an effort of 6 feet, 4 and 3/4 inches. Hokenson just missed three attempts at 6-7. Other first place finishes included Alex Zupan in the 1500 meters, Ben Treichel in the 400 meters, Anthony Schultzetenberg in both the 55 meter and 200 meter dash, the 4×200 meter relay and the 4×400 meter relay.
The women’s team recorded nine first place finishes in the meet. Blythe Bittman was the lone double winner for the Gusties with top finishes in the 55 meter and 200 meter dashes. Other first place finishers included Ashley Cronen in the 400 meters, Sari Lindeman in the triple jump, Heidi Gruenhagen in the shot put, Josie Thulien in the weight throw, Becca Thompson in the high jump, Kristi Schneider in the pole vault and the 4×200 meter relay team.
Next Saturday (Feb. 5), the Gusties will take part in the Minnesota State, Mankato Open. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
