WINONA, Minn. – The Gustavus baseball team on Sunday split with Saint Mary’s, winning game one 5-1 before falling in game two 5-4. The Gusties move to 19-10 overall and 10-2 in the MIAC, while the Cardinals move to 7-17 overall and 3-9 in the league.

Luke Siegle (So., Blaine) continued to make a case for MIAC Pitcher of the Year with his second straight complete game. In seven innings, Siegle allowed just one run on four hits with seven strikeouts, lowering his MIAC-leading ERA from 1.86 to 1.77. Siegle’s last 21 innings pitched have featured just one run on nine hits with 22 strikeouts.

Saint Mary’s scored its lone run of the game in the first after a singles, sac bunt, stolen base, and RBI single. After three scoreless frames, the Gusties tied the game in the fifth. Nick Azar (Sr., Edina) led off with a double to right, advanced to third on a sac bunt, and scored on a single by Sam Schneider (Fy., Rochester).

Gustavus went ahead 4-1 in the sixth with a two-out rally on three hits and an error. Chris Knowles (Jr., New Ulm) singled and later scored on a single by Luke Johnson (Sr., Paynesville). Schneider later hit a two-run single to center.

The final run crossed home in the seventh as Jack Hanson (Sr., Minnetonka) hit an infield single and later scored on a sac fly by Logan Bjorkman (Sr., Lindstrom).

Knowles led at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with a run.

The Gusties started the game with two runs in the first for the early lead. Hanson hit a double and scored on a base hit by Gavin Baker (Sr., Lakeville). Drake Siens (Jr., Rogers) doubled Baker over to third, who then scored on a groundout by Bjorkman.

Saint Mary’s tied the game in the second with two runs on four hits, but the Gusties regained the lead in the fourth. Knowles hit a sac fly to score Bjorkman, who reached on a hit by pitch.

Again the Cardinals answered to tie the game in the fifth with an RBI double, making the score 3-3. In the sixth, Siens hit a leadoff homer to left for a 4-3 advantage, but the Cardinals responded once again, this time on a two-run triple in the bottom half for a 5-4 lead.

Jayce Luna (Sr., Le Sueur) started on the mound and went four innings with two runs on six hits and five strikeouts in a no decision.

Hanson (2-4, R, 2B, SB), Baker (2-4, R, RBI), and Siens (2-4, R, RBI, 2B, HR) led at the plate.

Gustavus next travels to Carleton on Wednesday for a MIAC doubleheader at 2:30 p.m.
