SAINT PETER, Minn. – After facing No. 1 University of Chicago and No. 8 NC Wesleyan in days prior, the Gusties had one more ranked opponent to face as a part of the ITA Men’s Team Indoor Championships. The Gusties faced No. 10 Emory, falling by an eventual score of 5-3 to the Eagles.

The Gusties started off strong in the doubles, going 2-1 with victories in the No. 1 spot and No. 3 spot. Sourabh Terakanambi (Sr., Apple Valley) and Marco Siviero (So., Sao Miguel de Oeste, Brazil) rolled to an 8-2 victory in the three-spot, followed by Nick Aney (Sr., Rochester) and Daniel Fouchier (Sr., Nootdorp, Netherlands) who defeated the No. 1 doubles pair for the Eagles by a score of 8-4.

“The guys competed beautifully today,” said Head Coach Tommy Valentini. “We were in against a top-caliber national opponent with talent and fight and we were up to the challenge. Nick and Daniel faced the NCAA runner-up team at No. 1 doubles and played a great match to win there. Alex and Gage competed well but came up just short at 2, and Sourabh and Marco played their most complete match of the weekend and gave us a massive lift with a win at 3.”

Alex Budde (Sr., Menomonee Falls, Wis.) came out with the only singles victory for the Gusties, winning in the No. 6 spot with set scores of 7-5, 4-6, and 6-2 for the win.

“We battled our hearts out at every singles position. Alex showed great poise to win at 6 and all the guys gave everything they had to give us a look at it down the stretch. Nick, Neel, Marco, Daniel and Josh were all fantastic. This is how we wanted to compete in a match of this magnitude, and even though we came up just short on the scoreboard we made some great progress as a team today. Additionally it’s important to recognize that every member of our team gave everything they had this weekend. Our guys who weren’t on court held their teammates up at every turn and contributed immensely to how well we competed.

“In the end, it was a great weekend for the guys and a great weekend of top class college tennis. The weather threw us some curves early in the week, but a huge thanks goes to our Gustavus trainers, sports information staff, our officiating crew, the ITA, the visiting players and coaches, and our team and supporters for pulling off a great weekend. This is an incredibly special and meaningful event for DIII tennis and it’s not only an honor to compete in it, but an honor to host.”

The Gusties return to MIAC play this weekend, hosting Hamline at 12:30 on Saturday, followed by a non-conference matchup with Luther at 5 p.m.
