ELK RIVER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team sits in a tie for fifth place after shooting a 14-over 302 during Saturday’s first round of the Twin Cities Classic. Saint John’s leads the field with a score of even-par 288.

Wyatt Wasko (Sr., Lake Elmo) posted four birdies and finished the first round at two-under 70. He sits in fourth place on the individual leaderboard. Sam Skaar (Sr., Coleraine) and Cam Longie (So., Hutchinson) are tied for 36th after carding 77. Teddy Kaste (So., Apple Valley) shot a 78 and is tied for 49th while Chris Gutuza (Fy., Johannesburg, South Africa) shot an 80 and is tied for 70th.

Jack Reinardy (So., Andover) and Andrew Hoppe (Sr., Mankato) are leading the Gustavus B team and are tied for eighth place with scores of 73. Reinardy started his round with three birdies and an eagle in the first five holes, while Hoppe spread out four birdies in his round. Tommy Hinicker (Jr., Edina) is leading the Gustavus C team with an impressive three-under 69, including six birdies on the day, and is tied for second place individually.

“Elk River is a very deceiving course, you think you should be able to shoot some low numbers, but if you miss on the wrong side of the hole it will get you and we had some spots where that happened,” Head Coach Scott Moe said. “The birdie holes we played even or over, which is tough to swallow. Links at Northfork will present some new challenges as a links style course and the expected winds. We look forward to the opportunity to tee it up for day two and put ourselves in a better position. Wasko played another great round today, and on our other teams it was nice to see Tommy, Hoppe, and JR play solid.”

The second round from The Links at Northfork begins Sunday morning.
