HASTINGS, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team currently sits in fifth place after posting a 303 (+15) in opening rounds of the MIAC Championship. Saint John’s currently leads the tournament after the first round with a 284 (-4).
“We played a little nervous today,” said Head Coach Scott Moe. “We need to show a little bit more pizzazz tomorrow, it’s staying as positive as we can. We need to have a little bit more fun on the golf course. I’ve always been told a day on the golf course is always better than a day at the office. We need to remember that and enjoy our round and we will play a little bit more loose, not as tight, and have more success. Looking forward to more days of our conference championship. Nice round today by sophomores Hoppe and Wasko.”
The Gusties made strong opening impression with two eagles on the front nine from Sam Skaar (Jr., Bovey) on hole five and Wyatt Wasko (So., Lake Elmo) on hole seven.
Andrew Hoppe (So., Mankato) currently leads the Gusties and in is in eighth overall individually after shooting a 73 (+1), followed by Wasko in ninth with a 74 (+2). Jacob Pedersen (Jr., Minnetonka) shot 77 (+3) to rank twenty-second overall, Skaar paced with a 79 (+5), and Tommy Hiniker (Fy., Edina) closed with a first day score of 81 (+9).
The Gusties will compete in the second round on Sunday.
