No. 17 Women’s Basketball Plays Host To Saint Mary’s Wednesday

The No. 17 Gustavus women’s basketball team will look to remain perfect in the MIAC Wednesday versus Saint Mary’s for a 7 p.m. contest. The Gusties enter 10-1 overall and 6-0 in the MIAC while the Cardinals are 1-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

The Series: Wednesday’s contest is the 79th meeting between the Gusties and Cardinals, with Gustavus leading the overall series 53-25. The last time these two teams met, Saint Mary’s edged the Gusties 72-70 in Winona on Jan. 26, 2019.

Scouting The Gusties: Gustavus is most recently coming off a 65-56 win over St. Olaf Saturday. First-year Caitlin Rorman continues to lead the Gusties with 15.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game, while Ava Gonsorowski is second on the team with 13.7 points and leads the Black and Gold with 3.5 assists. Alison Hinck will make her first start of the season in place of the injured Gabby Bowlin. As a team, the Gusties have done well on the boards, leading the MIAC with a +6.8 rebound margin.

Scouting The Cardinals: Saint Mary’s dropped their fourth contest in a row at Bethel 62-78 Saturday. The Cardinals struggle to defend their opponents, ranking last in scoring defense  (76.1)and opponent field goal percentage (47.2). Shayley Vesel leads Saint Mary’s in scoring and rebounding with 16.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Brooklyn Paulson is the other Cardinal averaging double figures with 13.7 points per game.
