Hensch Wins Third MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete, Rooney and Stumbo Join on All-MIAC Team

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its men’s track & field postseason awards Thursday and three Gustavus student-athletes received recognition. Michael Hensch (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) was named Outstanding Field Athlete after winning the grand slam of throwing events, while Taylor Rooney (So., Andover, Minn.) and Andrew Stumbo (So., Boone, Iowa) earned All-Conference as well.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its men’s track & field postseason awards Thursday and three Gustavus student-athletes received recognition. Michael Hensch (Sr., North Branch, Minn.) was named Outstanding Field Athlete after winning the grand slam of throwing events, while Taylor Rooney (So., Andover, Minn.) and Andrew Stumbo (So., Boone, Iowa) earned All-Conference as well.

To be awarded All-Conference, individuals must place in the top-three in their respective events at the MIAC Championships.

Hensch earns MIAC Outstanding Field Athlete for the third consecutive season after winning all four throwing events. He set the MIAC Championships and school record in the hammer throw with a heave of 61.13 meters (200-7). His javelin went 190-8, the shot landed at 54-5.5, and the discus flew 156-4. He is the first person in the 99-year history of the MIAC to win all four throwing events at the conference championships. The North Branch native is nationally ranked No. 6 in shot, No. 7 in hammer, No. 13 in disc, and No. 28 in javelin.

Rooney also set a MIAC Championships and school record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.09 in the prelims. He won the finals at 14.15. Rooney also earned All-MIAC in the high jump, taking second with a leap of 6-5.5.

Stumbo joins the All-Conference team in the 10,000 meters, finishing third with a time of 31:40.18.

Nelson Finne (Sr., Elgin, Minn.) was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
