Men’s Tennis to Play for NCAA Region Title Sunday

For the eighth consecutive season, the Gustavus men’s tennis team will play in the NCAA region championship match after a 5-0 win over Grinnell on Saturday.

CHICAGO, Ill. – For the eighth consecutive season, the Gustavus men’s tennis team will play in the NCAA region championship match after a 5-0 win over Grinnell on Saturday. And for the fourth time in the last five years, the Gusties (20-7) will match up with the University of Chicago in the title match, which will be played at noon Sunday.

Saturday’s NCAA second round win over Grinnell featured a clean sweep of doubles followed by swift wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles.

The guys were great today,” Head Coach Tommy Valentini said. “The energy and execution were outstanding in the doubles. Nick and Yassine and Chase and Patrick came out flying. From there Michael and Xavier played very well to get us the sweep. We stayed very focused and present in the singles and handled the moment very well. Fittingly, our seniors led us to the fourth and fifth points, but all of the boys were competing well when we got the clinch. We’re grateful to be in the final 16, and we are looking forward to the challenge and excited to compete and enjoy the moment tomorrow.”
