SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Adam Stockwell (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) tossed a complete game gem in a 5-2 Gustavus win over Saint Mary’s in the opening matchup of the 2019 MIAC Baseball Championships at CHS Field. The Gusties, now 24-11, will face the winner of Saint John’s and St. Olaf at 3 p.m. Friday for a chance to go to the title game.

The game started as a pitchers’ duel between Stockwell and Saint Mary’s ace James Green with four scoreless innings before the Gusties tagged Green with three runs in the fifth. Brice Panning (Jr., Hamburg, Minn.) got an easy RBI with a bases-loaded walk and Carter Clemensen (So., Cologne, Minn.) ensued with a two-run single through the left side.

Saint Mary’s answered in the sixth with a run but the Gusties added to their lead in the bottom half. Jack Hanson (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.) doubled to left-center, scoring Ryan Moriarty (Sr., Le Sueur, Minn.) and Ethan Mocchi (So., Champlin, Minn.) for a 5-1 lead.

The Cardinals added their second run in the seventh, but Stockwell buckled down for the final two frames to earn his team-leading sixth win and second complete game. Stockwell allowed nine hits and struck out seven.

Hanson led the offense, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run. Dexter Leer (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) and Clemensen had two hits apiece.
