ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s golf team finished play at the SJU Invite and took second with a three round total of 887. The winner of the event, Saint John’s, shot an 884.

“We just came up a bit short today,” said Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey. “After starting out very flat in the first round today the guys settled in and put ourselves in a position to contend during the final round. Things started clicking and we ended up shooting our lowest score in the third round but we fell just short. Before the round we talked about bringing energy and patience to the course and although the energy wasn’t there early on, the guy did not get flustered and remained patient. We’re proud of the battle they put on today and want to congratulate Ben [Hauge] (Jr., Ramsey, Minn.) and Max [Ullan] (So., Blaine, Minn.) on their top 10 individual finishes.”

The Gusties were led by Hauge who posted a three day score of 70, 76, and 73 to finish tied for fifth overall. Ullan shot 72, 75, 73 to finish in seventh while Jacob Pedersen (Fy., Minnetonka, Minn.)  shot 73, 84, and 70 and finished tied for 18th. Carter Czichotzki (So., Moorhead, Minn.) shot 77, 75, and 78 while Thomas Carlson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) carded 78, 75, and 79 to round out the Gustavus five.

The second Gustavus team finished in 12th overall and were led by Sam Skaar (Fy., Bovey, Minn.) who posted 77, 76, and 77 to finish tied for 27th. Joe Foley (Jr., East Gull Lake, Minn.) shot 74, 77, and 81, Christian Thoen (Jr., Dawson, Minn.) shot 81, 79, and 83, and Blake Heiman (Sr., River Falls, Wis.) carded 76, 84, and 89 to round out the four Gustavus scores.

The Gusties will next be in action next weekend when they host a quadrangular at the Le Sueur Country Club on Friday and Saturday.
