Baseball Wins Two at Carleton for Back-to-Back MIAC Sweeps Posted on April 20th, 2019 by

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustavus baseball team won a pair of two-run games at Carleton, sweeping the doubleheader 3-1 and 7-5. The Gusties, now winners of their last four games, are 16-9 overall and 7-4 in the MIAC.

The Gusties started early with a run in the first inning as Brice Panning (Jr., Hamburg, Minn.) walked and scored on a double by Cole Pengilly (So., Le Sueur, Minn.). The Knights tallied their lone run in the second frame on a single, stolen base, wild pitch, and another single, but Christian Johnson (So., Buffalo, Minn.) settled in to throw 6.2 innings with six hits allowed and seven strikeouts. Johnson is now 3-2.

Gustavus scored the game-winning run in the fifth. Carter Clemensen (So., Cologne, Minn.) doubled and came home on a wild pitch. Clemensen scored again in the seventh on a single by Pengilly.

Adam Stockwell (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.) came in with the game-tying run on first base and two down in the bottom of the seventh, and got the next batter to fly out to end the game.

Clemensen (3-4, 2 R, 2 2B) and Pengilly (3-4, R, RBI, 2B) had six of the team’s nine hits.

The Gusties again started the game with a first-inning run. Clemensen doubled and scored on a hit by Pengilly. They then took a 2-0 advantage in the third as Clemensen hit a bunt single, and later scored on a single by Matt Berkner (Sr. Sleepy Eye, Minn.).

The Black and Gold increased their lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Dexter Leer (Sr., Owatonna, Minn.) drew a bases-loaded walk and Panning had a sacrifice fly.

The home team finally got to Gustie starter Sam Archer (Sr., Zimmerman, Minn.) in the sixth with a run on a pair of hits. The visitors responded in the seventh with a two-out rally, scoring two runs on an error and another by stealing home for a 7-1 lead.  Archer lasted one more inning and allowed another run in the seventh before giving way to Damon Rademacher (So., Princeton, Minn.), who tossed a scoreless eighth.

Weston Lombard (So., Stillwater, Minn.) came in relief for the ninth and got into a jam, allowing two unearned runs on the same error. Stockwell made his second appearances of the day with two out and a runner on third base, which then scored on another error, but a groundout ended the game and Stockwell picked up his second consecutive save.

Four Gusties had multiple-hit performances, including Clemensen (2-5, 2 R, 2B), Pengilly (2-6, RBI), Berkner (2-5, RBI), and Archer (2-4, 2 R, BB).

Gustavus next hosts St. Thomas at 2:30 p.m. Monday to resume their extra-inning affair that was suspended due to darkness on Tuesday. The Tommies will start the 11th inning at the plate with the score tied 5-5.
