SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus baseball team will travel to Collegeville, Minn. on Tuesday for a doubleheader with a 2:30 p.m. start time versus Saint John’s. The Gusties enter the contests with a 11-7 overall mark and 2-2 record in the MIAC while the Johnnies are 18-7 overall and 3-3 in the league.
The Series
Tuesday’s contests mark the 164th and 165th all-time meetings between the Johnnies and Gusties with SJU holding an 84-79 advantage. The last time the two teams met, on May, 11, 2018, the Johnnies took home a 6-3 win.
Scouting the Johnnies
Saint John’s is most recently coming off a pair of losses to Carleton on Saturday by scores of 5-0 and 5-3. Through 25 games the Johnnies are hitting an even .300 as a team while opponents hit .256 off the Johnnie pitching staff. Jack Schramel and Wyatt Ulrich are the two top bats for Saint John’s hitting .360 and .356 respectively with Ulrich posting the highest slugging percentage (.494) of everyday starters thanks to four doubles and four triples. Jack Wingard has also been a solid piece in the Johnnie lineup hitting .329 including nine doubles and holding the highest OB% with a .485. Bennett Wiggins and Alex Dickmeyer are the two probable starting pitchers for the Johnnies in the two games. Dickmeyer holds a 4-1 record with a 0.66 ERA in 41.0 innings, while Wiggins is 4-2 with a 4.13 ERA in 28.1 innings.
Scouting the Gusties
Gustavus is most recently coming off a series split with Bethel on Saturday, losing game one 9-2 before taking the second contest 4-3. Through 18 games the Gusties are hitting .274 as a team while holding opponents to an average of .242. Cole Pengilly has been a solid force in the three spot for the Gusties, hitting .400 with a team-high 14 runs scored. Matt Berkner, Brice Panning, and Sam Archer have started every game for the Black and Gold and all hold averages of at least .300 with Archer posting a team-best 16 RBI’s. Archer and Charlier Hutchinson are the two projected starting pitchers in the contests. Archer has posted a 1-0 record with a 7.04 ERA in 15.1 innings pitched, while Hutchinson is 0-2 with a 3.97 ERA in 11.1 innings on the hill.
