Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Jamestown Posted on March 3rd, 2019 by

TUCSON, Ariz. – On day two of the Tucson Invitational the Gustavus baseball team split a doubleheader with Jamestown (N.D.), claiming a comeback 11-10 win in game one followed by a 2-1 pitchers’ duel loss in game two.

The Jimmies gained all the momentum to start game one, plating five runs on as many hits in the first frame. Jamestown then took a 7-0 lead in the fourth before the Gusties ended the shutout in the fifth as Dexter Leer (Sr., Owatona, Minn.) scored on a sacrifice fly by Carter Clemensen (So., Cologne, Minn.).

Jamestown added three more runs in the bottom half and held the Gusties scoreless in the sixth. Down to three outs, Gustavus rallied for 10 runs in the top of the seventh on eight hits. Consecutive singles by Le Sueur, Minn. natives Ryan Moriarty (Sr.) and Cole Pengilly (So.) followed by an error loaded the bases for Sam Archer (Sr., Zimmerman, Minn.) who delivered a two-run single. Brice Panning (Jr., Hamburg, Minn.) and Matt Berkner (Sr., Sleepy Eye, Minn.) ensured with back-to-back RBI singles. Ethan Mocchi’s (So., Champlin, Minn.) walk loaded the bases for Grant Brockhouse (Sr., Urbandale, Iowa) who drove in a run.

After a Jimmie pitching change, Leer walked in a run followed two batters later by a two-run single off the bat of Pengilly. Down to the final out, Archer drove in Pengilly for what proved to be game-winning run.

Damon Rademacher (So., Princeton, Minn.) closed out the seventh for the save with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout to secure the improbable comeback win.

Pengilly finished with three hits, two runs, and two RBI. Archer hit 2-for-5 with three RBI. Michael Anderson (So., Lake Crystal, Minn.) was the pitcher of record after tossing a scoreless eighth.

Game two switched gears into a pitchers’ duel. Charlie Hutchinson (So., Maple Grove, Minn.) went four scoreless innings to start the game, surrendering just three hits and four walks.

The Jimmes broke the shutout in the fifth but the Gusties answered on the bottom half on consecutive ground-rule doubles by Archer and Panning.

Jamestown answered in the sixth, scoring the eventual game-winning run on a couple hits.

Weston Lombard (So., Stillwater, Minn.) suffered the loss after one and two-thirds innings of relief. Gavyn Walsh (So., Andover, Minn.) got the last out in the sixth and struck out the side in the seventh. Archer led the offense, batting 2-for-3 with a run.

Gustavus has Monday off and then faces Aurora at 7:30 p.m. CST Tuesday.
