Lee, Malo Named December Athletes of the Month

Women’s basketball player Justine Lee (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) and men’s basketball player Nolan Malo (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) have been named Gustavus December Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month, which is voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department and presented by Thrivent Financial.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – Women’s basketball player Justine Lee (Sr., Dawson, Minn.) and men’s basketball player Nolan Malo (Fy., Owatonna, Minn.) have been named Gustavus December Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Month, which is voted on by the Gustavus Sports Information Department and presented by Thrivent Financial.

The Gustavus women’s basketball team amassed a 3-2 record during the month of December, guided by a 15.2 point per game effort from senior guard Justine Lee. Starting in every game, Lee put up double digit scoring numbers in all five games during the month for a total of 76 points, shooting 47.5 percent from the field (29-for-61) while collecting 18 rebounds and 17 steals. On Dec. 8 versus Saint Mary’s, Lee put up a career high 26 points on 9-for-12 shooting including draining all three of her three-point attempts.

Malo led Gustavus offensively in the month of December compiling a total of 80 points in five games for an average of 16 points per contest. Starting all five contests for the Black and Gold, Malo shot the ball at 58.8 percent (30-for-51) from the field including 6-for-13 from beyond the arc (46.2 percent). He also corralled 30 rebounds in the five contest and dished out nine assists. On Dec. 5 Malo broke out for career-best 23 points on 10-for-12 shooting against Macalester and followed that up three days later with a 24-point effort against Saint Mary’s which set a new career high for the first year. Averaging 11.5 points per game, Malo is the top scoring first-year at this point in the season since Head Coach Mark Hanson averaged 15.4 points per game in his rookie season in 1979.
