Men’s Hockey Uses Power Play to Overcome UW-Superior 5-3 Posted on November 9th, 2018 by

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team won a back and forth battle with the UW-Superior Yellowjackets by a score of 5-3, improving to 2-2-1.

The Gusties started strong scoring two first period goals and holding the Yellowjackets scoreless. Caleb Anderson (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored his third goal of the season at the 7:52 mark of the first period with assists going to Evan Erickson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) and Brendan Elliot (Fy., Marquette, Mich.). Less than five minutes later the Gusties struck again when Toby Sengvongxay (Fy., Luverne, Minn.) scored a power play goal with assists going to Van Sullivan (Sr., Brentwood, Tenn.) and Will LeNeave (So., Medina, Minn.).

The scoring quieted until the 6:12 mark of the second period when UW-Superior scored its first goal to make it 2-1 and then added another at the 12:06 mark to tie the game at 2-2.

The power play came in handy again in the third period when the Gusties scored another goal a man up at the 6:38 mark when LeNeave found the back of the net unassisted. Gustavus took a two-goal lead at the 9:32 mark when Colton Schmidt (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) scored his second goal of the season with assists going to Axel Hallin (Jr., Hovas, Sweden) and Sullivan.

The Yellowjackets scored at the 10:39 mark, but the Gusties clinched the game at the 18:09 mark when J.P. Eykyn (So., Waseca, Minn.) scored an empty net goal to give the Gusties the 5-3 lead that held out for the victory.

Robbie Goor (So., Anoka, Minn.) got the start in net for the Gusties, making 44 saves while allowing three goals.

The Gusties travel to UW-Stout tomorrow for a 7 p.m. contest.
