NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Gustie women’s hockey team got their conference season underway Friday night taking down the Oles of St. Olaf by a score of 1-0 as head coach Mike Carroll recorded his 400th win.

After the first period went scoreless with the Gusties outshooting the Oles 7-5, the Gusties kept the pressure on and were rewarded when Amelia Vosen (Jr., Nowthen, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season and what ended up being the game winning goal to give the Gusties the 1-0 lead.

The Gusties outshot the Oles in all three periods and outshot them in the game by a tally of 27-16.

Amanda DiNella (Sr., Oakbrook Terrace), fresh off being named MIAC Player of the Week and d3hockey.com Goaltender of the Week, produced another solid performance making 16 saves and allowing no goals.

“She’s been doing it for four years and every team would like to have solid goaltending and we do,” said Carroll. “She made one super big save there at the end, where you had to see it. It was such a good glove save I can’t even describe it. Her play gives our defense and our forwards confidence that we know we can maybe bend but not break.”

On getting his 400th career win, coach Carroll said, “It feels good, it means I’m getting old but I’ve had a lot of good players over the years and a lot of good coaches and it’s nice to get it done with and focus on keeping our momentum going.”

With the win, Carroll becomes the second Division III women’s hockey coach ever to reach 400 wins, trailing only Bill Mandigo.

The Gusties will be back in action tomorrow for 2 p.m. contest when they host the Oles.
