BLAINE, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team started its 2018-19 season with a 3-1 win over Saint Mary’s at the MIAC Showcase on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period, Brenden Payne (Fy., Plainfield, Ill.) scored his first collegiate goal on a power play at the 3:26 mark of the second period, assisted by Caleb Anderson (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Evan Erickson (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.).

The Cardinals tied the score at 1-1 just over a minute into the third period, but with six minutes remaining in the game, Anderson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal. And with 50 seconds remaining in regulation, Nick Klishko (So., San Diego, Calif.) put the game out of reach with an empty-net goal, assisted by Tyler Ebner (Fy., La Crosse, Wis.).

The Gusties outshot the Cardinals 38-16 as Chris Amsden (Sr., St. Peter, Minn.) made 15 saves in net to record the win. The Gusties also killed two power play opportunities.

Gustavus has tomorrow off and then faces Concordia at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
