SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s and women’s cross country teams experienced their first unofficial meet of the season Saturday at the Linnaeus Arboretum by hosting the annual Alumni Meet. Unlike in years past, the Gusties did not have other collegiate teams competing in its Alumni Meet, so the results are unofficial.
“We have a good cross country family here at Gustavus,” Head Coach Brenden Huber said. “We have a lot of new faces on this team so for them so see how much pride there is in this program, it’s huge.”
Nicole Porath ’05 won the women’s 5k race with a time of 19:22. Marit Sonnesyn ’16 took second at 19:36 and Lotus Schifsky (Sr., Prescott, Wis.) placed third at 20:18. Nick Ross ’11 won the men’s 5k race at 16:12. Paul Nordquist ’16 was close behind in second at 16:14 and Alex Wischnack (Sr., Norwood, Minn.) took third at 16:24.
“A lot of the kids today were tired because we’ve been getting after it in practice this past week, but early camp is all about the building blocks for the whole season,” Huber said. “Hopefully we knocked off some rust today so they can race sharp next week.”
The Gusties travel to St. Bonifacious, Minn. next Saturday to compete in the Crown College Invite. The women’s race starts at 10 a.m. and the men at 10:45 a.m.
