Men’s Tennis Garners Four All-Conference Members

The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its men’s tennis postseason awards Tuesday and four Gusties were recognized as All-Conference members.

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its men’s tennis postseason awards Tuesday and four Gusties were recognized as All-Conference members.

Mohanad Alhouni (Sr., Tripoli, Libya), Mason Bultje (Sr., Mankato, Minn.), Gabe Steinwand (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.), and Patrick Whaling (Jr., Manakin Sabot, Va.) were all named to the All-Conference Singles Team, while Alhouni, Bultje, and Whaling were named to the All-Conference Doubles Team.

As he nears the end of his historic collegiate career, Alhouni earns All-MIAC singles and doubles honors for the fourth time. Ranked as the top Division III singles player in the country after capturing the national championship at the ITA Oracle Cup last October, Alhouni went 4-0 in the MIAC in singles play and is 26-7 overall. As the No. 6-ranked doubles team in the nation along with Whaling as his partner, the duo went 5-0 in the MIAC and is 21-4 overall. Alhouni was also named MIAC Athlete of the Week twice on March 13 and April 24.

Bultje earns his first All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles. Bultje went 5-0 in MIAC singles play and is 10-2 overall. In doubles action, the Mankato native went 6-0 in the MIAC and is 15-6 overall. Bultje played both Nos. 3 and 4 singles against conference opponents, and has been a staple at No. 3 doubles with partner Zach Ekstein (Sr., Eagan, Minn.), who was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.

Steinwand receives his second All-MIAC singles honor. The Moorhead native posted a 5-0 singles mark in MIAC action and is 7-8 overall. In doubles play, Steinwand went 4-0 in league and is 7-5 overall. He played the majority of his singles matches at No. 2 and in doubles was at Nos. 2 and 3.

Whaling collects his first All-MIAC singles award and second doubles honor. The Manakin Sabot native and No. 17-ranked singles player in the Central Region has played anywhere from No. 2 to No. 4 singles where he went 4-0 in the conference and is 19-8 overall. In doubles, Whaling is 21-4 overall and posted a 5-0 mark in the MIAC at the No. 1 spot. Whaling was also named MIAC Athlete of the Week twice on Feb. 27 and May 1.
