Women’s Basketball Earns At-Large Bid To NCAA Championships, Faces Rose-Hulman At UW-Whitewater Posted on February 26th, 2018 by

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on Monday afternoon announced the 64-team field for its Division III Women’s Basketball Championship and Gustavus (22-6) is selected to face No. 20-ranked Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (24-3) in the first round at 5 p.m. Friday, March 2, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Rose-Hulman earned an automatic bid as the playoff champion of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Fightin’ Engineers defeated Hanover and Transylvania in their league playoffs to advance to the national tournament.

The Gusties are in a four-team regional bracket that also includes host UW-Whitewater and UW-Superior. The winners of Friday’s games play each other on Saturday. The top half of the eight-team pod includes host Thomas More, Oglethorpe, Piedmont, and Juniata.

Gustavus is making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships after losing to DePauw University in the opening round last year. This year’s national tourney berth is the seventh in program history for the Gusties, where they hold a 1-6 record. Rose-Hulman is also making its second straight appearance at the NCAA Championships after losing to Wheaton (Ill.) in the opening round last year.
