GAME NOTES

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team returns to action this weekend, hosting a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series against Concordia College. The Gusties (8-10-3, 7-5 MIAC) drop the puck against the Cobbers (8-10-3, 5-6-1 MIAC) at 7:05 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Last Time Out

The Gusties were swept by Saint Mary’s University two weekends back, falling 1-0 at Don Roberts Ice Rink in game one prior to a 4-3 loss in Winona, Minn. the following night. Chris Amsden (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) started both games between the pipes, collecting 56 saves.

Series Snapshot

Friday’s game will mark the 120th all-time meeting between the Gustavus and Concordia men’s ice hockey programs, with the Gusties holding an 83-29-7 advantage in the series. The two teams most recently met during the MIAC Showcase in Blaine, Minn. Oct. 28 as they skated to a 1-1 overtime draw. The Cobbers hold a 5-3-2 advantage during the last 10 meetings and swept Gustavus last season in Moorhead, Minn. with a 2-1 win and 3-2 overtime victory. 

Scouting Concordia

The Cobbers, who have an identical overall record as Gustavus at 8-10-3, own a 5-6-1 conference record and sit directly below the Gusties at 5th place in the MIAC standings. Concordia most recently faced the University of St. Thomas a couple weekends ago and were swept by the Tommies in Moorhead, Minn., falling 3-1 and 2-1. Over the past three conference series, the Cobbers have been outscored 28-16 while averaging 4.7 goals against the 2.7 goals for per game.

Junior forward Mario Bianchi ranks within the top-five scorers in the MIAC with 22 points (7g-15a), while senior forward Zach Doerring is tied for second in the conference with 13 goals. Sophomore goaltenders Jacob Stephan and Sam Nelson have shared time in goal with 11 and 10 starts, respectively. Stephan leads the pair with a .920 save percentage (6th/MIAC) and 2.63 goals against average (7th/MIAC).

Goaltending Consistency

The netminding duo of Chris Amsden and Robbie Goor (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) have continued to be a steady between the pipes, each sharing time in goal. Amsden ranks third in the conference with a .926 save percentage, while Goor ranks third with a 2.11 goals against average.

Gustavus Notables

  • First-year forward Caleb Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) leads the MIAC in freshman scoring and is tied for the team-lead with 13 points (4g-9a).
    • Anderson is tied for the lead in the MIAC with two shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored one shorthanded goal all of last season.
  • Colin Hernon (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) had his four-game point streak with six points (3g- 3a) ended during the Saint Mary’s series. Hernon and Evan Erickson (Jr., Woodbury, Minn.) are tied for the team-lead in scoring with 15 poitns each.
  • After two consecutive series sweeps over Hamline and Bethel, the Gusties surpassed their win total from the 2016-17 season.
  • 18 different Gusties have found their way into the goal-scoring column this season.
    • 10 Gusties have recorded at least three goals on the season.
  • Nick Sheak (Sr., Woodbury, Minn.) tallied his first goal of the season at Saint Mary’s.
  • The Gusties have outscored their opponents 30-18 in the second period.
  • Gustavus has posted a 7-2-2 record when scoring a power-play goal and is 1-8-1 when coming up empty on the man advantage.
