MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 5-ranked Gustavus women’s hockey team erased a one-goal deficit in the third period Friday and skated to a 1-1 overtime draw against Augsburg. The tie moves the Gusties to 11-2-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the MIAC, while the Auggies move to 9-4-3 overall and 4-2-3 in the league.
After a scoreless first period that saw the Gusties win the shot battle 10-8, the home team scored at the 11:26 mark of the second on a power play. The Auggies held the slim lead until 5:08 remaining in regulation when Kristen Cash (So., Roseville, Minn.) buried her fourth goal of the season with the help of Diana Draayer (Sr., Deephaven, Minn.).
“We weren’t particularly happy with our play going into the third period and it was a gut check for us,” Head Coach Mike Carroll said. “We played much better in the third by winning some battles and took good shots. Hopefully this is a good push for us heading into tomorrow.”
Gustavus controlled the pace of play during the overtime period and even took a penalty shot after Augsburg was whistled for a delay of game by taking its own goal off its moorings to prevent a goal, but the penalty shot by Erica Power (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) was stopped. The Gusties outshot the Auggies 9-0 in the final five minutes and 37-25 in the game.
Amanda DiNella (Jr., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.) made 24 saves in 65 minutes of work in goal.
The Gusties and Auggies wrap up the series at 2 p.m. tomorrow in St. Peter.
