Women’s Basketball Set For Highly Competitive Wartburg Holiday Tourney This Weekend Posted on December 28th, 2017 by

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s basketball team is set to participate in a highly-competitive four-team invitational this weekend at the Wartburg Holiday Tournament in Waverly, Iowa. The Gusties face No. 11 UW-Whitewater at 4 p.m. Friday. The winner will face the winner of No. 4 Wartburg and UW-Superior at 3 p.m. Saturday, while the losers face each other at 1 p.m. Saturday. Gustavus enters the weekend 8-1 overall, while UW-Whitewater is 9-0, Wartburg is 9-0, and UW-Superior is 8-2.

GAME NOTES

Scouting the Warhawks: UW-Whitewater has started its season a perfect 9-0 having played all non-conference games. The Warhawks most recently defeated Central 53-41 on Dec. 19. Brooke Trewyn and Malia Smith lead the offense with 12.6 and 10.4 points per game, respectively. Trewyn also leads the team on the glass with 7.4 rebounds per game. The Warhawks average 68.9 points per game and shoot 40.7 percent from the floor, while limiting their opponents to 51.1 points per game and 34 percent shooting.

Going for 100: Gustavus Head Coach Laurie Kelly is going for her 100th victory at the helm of the Gusties, entering Friday’s game with a 99-43 record in Black and Gold. Kelly would become the third Gustavus head coach in program history to reach 100 wins, behind Mickey Haller (226-94) and Peg Moline (118-83). Kelly would also become the second fastest coach to reach 100 wins as Haller did it after 142 games and Kelly is coaching her 143rd game Friday.
