GAME NOTES

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team is set to head north for a non-conference game Friday evening at the College of St. Scholastica. Coming off back-to-back Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweeps, the Gusties (6-3-1 overall, 5-1 MIAC) will drop the puck against the Saints (3-5-1, 3-4-1 NCHA) at 7:00 p.m.

Series Snapshot

Friday’s game marks the 37th all-time meeting between Gustavus and St. Scholastica, with the Gusties holding a 19-16-1 advantage in the series. The two teams met last season at Don Roberts Ice Rink, with the Saints escaping with a 4-1 victory. 

Last Time Out

The Gusties earned their second consecutive sweep, shutting out Bethel University in both games by scores of 3-0 and 4-0 to establish sole possession of first place in the MIAC standings.

On Friday at Don Roberts Ice Rink, Caleb Anderson’s power play goal in the first period stood as the game-winner, while Chris Amsden (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) recorded his first shutout of the season, the third of his career, making 27 saves.

On Saturday up in Blaine, Minn., the Black and Gold followed up Friday’s shutout performance with a 4-0 victory. Logan Norman (Fy., Luverne, Minn.) scored his third and fourth goals of the season, his first two-goal game of his young career, while Amsden posted 29 saves for his fourth career shutout.

Scouting St. Scholastica

The Saints most recently snapped a five-game losing streak with a 4-4 draw at Trine University last Saturday, moving their record to 3-5-1 overall. In search of its first win since Nov. 3, St. Scholastica averages 2.22 goals per game and currently sits in second place in the Northern Division of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. First-year forward Parker Mismash and sophomore forward Kyle Star are tied for the Saint’s scoring lead with one goal and five assists each. Goaltenders Nick Trenciansky, Forbes Pioszaj, and Zane Steeves have all shared time in net. Each average over a .900 save percentage and under a 3.00 goals against average.

  • First-year forward Caleb Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) leads the MIAC in freshman scoring and is tied for the team-lead with nine points (4g-5a).
  • Anderson is tied for the lead in Division III with two shorthanded goals. The Gusties scored one shorthanded goal all of last season.
  • Anderson is tied for the lead in the conference with two game-winning goals.
  • With four-straight wins, the Gusties have surpassed their win total from the 2016-17 season.
  • After back-to-back shutouts, Chris Amsden owns a .939 save percentage (3rd/MIAC), and a 1.81 goals against average (5th/MIAC).
