ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team tallied an even strength, power play, and shorthanded goal in a 3-1 non-conference victory over the University of Wisconsin-Superior Friday evening at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

Despite an even mark of 27 shots on goal from the Gusties and the Yellowjackets, Gustavus was able to capitalize on several UW-Superior defensive lapses while goaltender Robbie Goor (Fy., Anoka, Minn.) stood tall en route to recording his first collegiate win in goal.

Late in the first period, a pass from Van Sullivan (Jr., Brentwood, Tenn.) sprung a wide open Jake McCann (Sr., Shoreview, Minn.) for a breakaway goal, his first of the season to give the Gusties a 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

The second frame was a special teams battle, with both teams committing four penalties each. Just over a minute into the period, Caleb Anderson (Fy., Sioux Falls, S.D.) took advantage of a Yellowjacket turnover. Taking the puck strong to the net, Anderson made a nice move and slid his first collegiate goal past UW-Superior netminder Cole Skinner’s five-hole for the shorthanded tally.

After suffering four power play goals against St. Olaf in the previous game, the Gustie penalty kill had their work cut out again and were up to the task, turning away six UW-Superior power play chances. Gustavus went 1-for-5 on the man advantage as Colin Hernon (Sr., Bloomington, Minn.) jammed in a rebound at 15:02 to give the Black and Goal and three-goal cushion, his first of the season.

The Yellowjackets got on the board with under 30 seconds remaining in the third period, putting home a loose puck in the crease with an extra attacker.

Goor made 26 saves to earn his first win in Black and Gold, while Anderson notched an assist on the Hernon goal to cap his game-winning goal.

Gustavus, now 2-2-1 overall, returns to Don Roberts Ice Rink tomorrow evening with another matchup with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent in the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m.
