GAME NOTES

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team opens its 2017-18 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Schedule this weekend with a series against St. Olaf College. The Oles (1-1, 0-0 MIAC) host the Gusties (0-1-1, 0-0 MIAC) in Northfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday prior to the Gusties home opener Saturday evening at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

1968 and 1993 Celebrations

Saturday’s season opener will feature the 25th and 50th anniversary celebrations of the 1967-68 and 1992-93 MIAC Championship Gustavus men’s hockey teams.

The 1968 Gusties finished their conference schedule with a 12-2 record and entered the first annual NAIA tournament in St. Paul, Minn., placing third in a four team field. The 1993 Gusties featured the program’s 13th conference title as they skated to a 13-2-1 record during MIAC play. The Gusties defeated Saint Mary’s in the MIAC Semifinals, followed by a win over St. Thomas to claim the playoff title and a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Last time out

The Gusties opened their 2017-18 campaign last weekend at the MIAC Showcase at Schwan’s Super Rink in Blaine, Minn., falling 3-2 in overtime against Augsburg University and tying Concordia College 1-1. On Friday, the Gusties held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period. However, Gustavus allowed the No. 13-ranked Auggies to roar back and earn the win. On Saturday, the Black and Gold again took the first lead before giving up the game-tying goal against the Cobbers in the third. The teams teams were held scoreless in the extra period and were led to a shootout. Jake Bushey (Sr., Duluth, Minn.) notched the shootout game-winner for bragging rights.

First-years featured

Nine Gustavus freshman cracked the lineup at the MIAC Showcase, including sophomores Charlie Haugen (Falcon Heights, Minn.) and Casey Rock (Savage, Minn.) appearing in the first games in Black and Gold. The Gustie newcomers also accounted for half of the team’s scoring through the first two games. Will LeNeave (Medina, Minn.) and Logan Norman (Luverne, Minn.) tallied their first collegiate goals, Caleb Anderson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Logan Haskins (Rochester, Minn.) contributed assists, and goaltender Robbie Goor (Anoka, Minn.) made his collegiate debut in goal, recording 17 saves.
