EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – After sitting in seventh place after the first round of the Frank Wrigglesworth Invite, the Gustavus men’s golf team posted the lowest second round team score to jump up four spots and finish third of 16 on Monday afternoon. The Gusties shot a 310-300-610, which was four shots off the leader Augsburg at 297-309-606. Host UW-Eau Claire took second with a 305-302-607.
Alec Aunan (Sr., Rock Island, Ill.) finished in a tie for second place after improving upon his first round total of 82 by 15 shots in the second round, carding a career-low 67, which was the best round of the tournament and tied for the seventh lowest round in the storied history of Gustavus men’s golf. Aunan tied his career-best round having shot a 67 at the Twin Cities Classic last year.
“We had a better score today and that obviously helps when Alec fires a 67 with six birdies and an eagle – great score today,” Head Coach Scott Moe said. “We still must have more consistency. We had too many loose shots that led to penalty strokes and doubles. You can’t win events when you make those numbers.”
Chris Captain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) also posted a top-10 finish, tying for eighth with a 76-75-151. Ben Hauge (So., Ramsey, Minn.) tied for 19th with a 76-78-154, Joe Foley (So., East Gull Lake, Minn.) placed 41st with a 76-83-159, and Carter Czichotzki (Fy., Moorhead, Minn.) finished 54th with an 82-80-162.
Gustavus next competes in the Saint John’s Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
“Looking forward to the Saint John’s event next weekend,” Moe said. “It will be a very strong field and we will need to play well. I think a good week of sharpening our games will yield good results.”
We’d like to think that we are “trending”. Build on this and blow them away next week at St Johns tourney!
