EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s golf team sits in seventh place out of 16 teams after the first round of the Frank Wrigglesworth Invite, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Clarie. The Gusties shot a 310 (+22), which is 13 shots off the leader Augsburg. Viterbo and UW-Eau Claire are tied for second after shooting 303.
“Not a good start at all, we made some bad swings early and got into hazard trouble,” Head Coach Scott Moe said. “I was pleased with the middle of our round, we were five or six-under through about a nine-hole stretch, then we found some more trouble on the closing holes.”
Joe Foley (So., East Gull Lake, Minn.), Chris Captain (Sr., Rochester, Minn.), and Ben Hauge (So., Ramsey, Minn.) each carded a 76, which is tied for 13th place. Carter Czichotzki (Fy., Moorhead, Minn.) and Alec Aunan (Sr., Rock Island, Ill.) both shot an 82 and are tied for 62nd. Levi Hauser of Augsburg and Ryan Isaacson of UW-Eau Claire are tied for the lead after shooting 70.
“If we put together a solid 18 holes we can make a good run,” Moe said. “We need to be better off the tee to give us good looks and then need to see a few putts fall early to get some confidence and then finish strong.”
The Frank Wrigglesworth Invite concludes tomorrow.
