TEMPE, Ariz. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) recently announced its 2017 Division III All-Americans, with Gustavus men’s tennis No. 1 singles player Mohanad Alhouni (Jr., Tripoli, Libya) earning a spot on the singles team while the duo of Alhouni and Patrick Whaling (So., Manikob Sabot, Va.) were selected to the doubles team.
Alhouni won his second-straight ITA Midwest Regional Tournament on Oct. 3 in St. Peter, Minn. against his teammate and doubles partner in Whaling, automatically being qualified for his second All-American honor. He then went on to take third place at the ITA Oracle Cup on Oct. 15 in Surprise, Ariz. Alhouni posted an overall record of 34-6 in singles play on the season, including a 22-3 record at No. 1 singles position. The junior standout’s season was ended in the first round of the NCAA Singles Tournament, being upset by Chase Lipscomb of the University of Redlands, falling 6-7, 6-2, 6-7.
The No. 1 doubles pair of Alhouni and Whaling finished the season with an overall record of 22-10 while going undefeated during Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition, leading the Guties to their 29th consecutive MIAC regular season championship and their seventh straight league playoff title while helping Gustavus reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. The Gusties’ top doubles duo reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA Doubles Tournament and fell to Middlebury College’s top duo of Lubomir Cuba and William de Quant 3-6, 6-7.
