Men’s Swim & Dive Wraps Up Day One In Second Place At MIAC Championships Posted on February 16th, 2017 by

SESSION ONE RESULTS | SESSION TWO RESULTS

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.The Gustavus men’s swimming & diving team compiled 212 points to sit in second place through the first two sessions and 11 events of the three-day MIAC Championships at the University of Minnesota Jean Freeman Aquatic Center.

During session one, the Gusties owned three top-three preliminary times. In the 200-yard individual medley, Tanner Sonnek (So., North Mankato, Minn.) clocked a time of 1:55.15, barely finishing behind the first place time of 1:55.14 to earn a runner-up time. Matt Allison (Fy., Grand Rapids, Minn.) led all 50-yard freestyle competitors with a NCAA Selection top time of 20.51. Logan Bican (Fy., Monticello, Minn.) met the NCAA Diving Zone selection score with a preliminary/semi one-meter dive score of 435.35.

During the first finals session, the Gusties posted five all-conference (top-three) finishes, including two MIAC individual titles.

Tanner Sonnek and Matt Allison both earned first place finishes for the Gusties. In the 200-yard individual medley, Sonnek held the top finals time of 1:53.06. Allison finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.72, barely missing a NCAA B-cut time.

In one-meter diving, Logan Bican recorded a third place score of 442.70 points to meet a NCAA ‘A’ Qualification.

Additionally, two Gustavus relay teams were all-conference finishers. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Allison, Will Clark (Fy., Northfield, Minn.), Sonnek, and Andrew Peters (So., Montevideo, Minn.) clocked a second place time of 1:23.01. The 400-yard medley relay team of Frankie Zobitz (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.), Sonnek, Zach Holman (So., Mayer, Minn.), and Allison finished third with a time of 3:25.40. 

“The team swam great today,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson. “They created such a great atmosphere on deck and it carried over to the pool. You can really tell that they’re swimming for each other and trying to accomplish something as a team. There was inspiring swim after inspiring swim and they just fed off each other all day. I’m very excited for the next two days.”

Friday’s morning session is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the evening session at 6:30 p.m.
