ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday at Don Roberts Ice Rink, losing 3-1 to the University of St. Thomas. The loss drops the Gusties to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the league, while the Tommies improve to 2-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

St. Thomas got on the board at the 11:46 mark in the first period and led 1-0 after the first 20 minutes. The Tommies controlled the pace of play in the first period, outshooting the Gusties 9-2. The visitors increased their lead to 2-0 1:13 into the second frame and then jumped ahead 3-0 at the 9:16 mark. After 40 minutes, the Tommies led 3-0 and outshot the home team 18-11.

Gustavus ended the shutout at the 7:02 mark in the third period with a two-on-one breakaway. Reid Brown (Fy., Superior, Colo.) made a crossing pass to Evan Erickson (So., Woodbury, Minn.) who fired home his third goal of the season. But the Tommies were able to hold on to their two-goal lead the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Both teams went 0-2 on the power play. St. Thomas won the shots on goal category 29-21. Erik Johnson (Sr., Sauk Rapids, Minn.) suffered the loss after making 26 saves.

Gustavus wraps up the series with the Tommies at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in St. Paul.
