EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Mae Meierhenry (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) carded a day two score of 80 (+8) to claim the individual championship and lead the Gustavus women’s golf to a team title Monday at the Georgianni Blugold Invitational at Wild Ridge Golf Club in Eau Claire, Wis.
Following the first 18 holes of the event at Eau Claire Golf and Country Club on Sunday, the Gusties were atop of the leaderboard with a team score of 339 (+51). Gustavus took another step and shot a score of 326 (+38) in the final round to take the team championship. The Gusties finished with a 12-shot lead over the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and the rest of the seven-team field.
“Sometimes it’s difficult to hold on to the lead after the first round but I was very pleased with the effort and the score the team posted today,” said Assistant Coach Randy Stuckey. “Conditions were very windy but they were patient and relaxed.”
Meierhenry sat at second place with a score of 77 after round one, but a day two score of 80 propelled her into first place, finishing 13-over-par (77-80–157). Meierhenry took the individual crown with five strokes ahead of her closest competitor, finishing first out of 43 participants.
Jessica Nelson (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) also earned medalist honors with a third place finish. Nelson carded a 78 (+6) to finish 20-over-par (86-78–164).
In addition to Meierhenry and Nelson, five other Gusties finished among the top-10 on the final leaderboard:
T8: Abbie Grevlos (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D) (89-83–172/+28)
T8: Morgan Bleyhl (Fy., Elk River, Minn.) (87-85–172/+28)
T10: McKenzie Swenson (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) (88-85–173/+29)
T10: Kristen Cash (Fy., Roseville, Minn.) (88-85–173/+29)
T10: Mallory Drenttel (Sr., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) (89-84–173/+29)
“After the round, we talked about the areas of the game that can save some strokes in and that will be the focus of our work going forward,” Stuckey commented.
The Gusties next travel to Greencastle, Ind. to compete in the DePauw Invitational September 17-18.
