ST. PETER, Minn. – With a playoff berth on the line, the Gustavus Adolphus College women’s hockey team is set to compete in its final regular season series this weekend against Hamline University. The Gusties travel to Oscar Johnson Arena in St. Paul on Friday for a 7 p.m. game with the Pipers, and host Saturday’s regular season finale at Don Roberts Ice Rink at 2 p.m. Gustavus enters the series at 7-6-3 in the MIAC, while Hamline comes in at 6-9-1 in the league.
THE PLAYOFF PICTURE
Gustavus enters its series with Hamline in the rare situation of being on the outside of the playoff picture looking in and needs help in order to secure a berth. However, just one point separates the Gusties and Saint Mary’s University which currently sits in the fifth and final playoff spot. Here’s a look at possible situations over the weekend and what needs to happen for the Black and Gold to clinch its 17th straight MIAC Playoff berth:
-If Saint Mary’s sweeps: Gustavus eliminated from playoff contention
-If Saint Mary’s wins one and ties one: Gustavus must sweep Hamline to earn playoff berth
-If Saint Mary’s wins one and loses one: Gustavus must sweep Hamline to earn playoff berth
-If Saint Mary’s ties both: Gustavus needs one win and a tie or win to earn playoff berth
-If Saint Mary’s ties one and loses one: Gustavus needs one win to earn playoff berth
-If Saint Mary’s is swept: Gustavus needs one win to earn playoff berth
The Gusties could also potentially get help from Augsburg, but only if the Auggies are swept by the College of Saint Benedict. If Augsburg is swept, Gustavus needs at least one win and one tie to bypass the Auggies.
