ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus volleyball team won its 18th consecutive match Saturday afternoon at Gus Young Court, defeating the University of Wisconsin-Superior in straight sets 25-15, 25-20 and 25-14. The non-conference win improves the Gusties’ overall record to 18-2.

UW-Superior scored the first point in the opening set, but Gustavus took the next five points and held the advantage for the majority of the game. The Yellowjackets scored four consecutive points midway through the set to take a 12-11 lead, but the Gusties responded by claiming the next five points to regain a 16-12 advantage. Leading 19-15 late in the set, Gustavus rattled off six straight points to take the game 25-15.

The Yellowjackets once again took the first point of the set to start the second, but the Gusties immediately regained the lead and never let go of the advantage the rest of the way. Gustavus’ largest lead proved to be the game-winning point as UW-Superior stayed within four points for the whole set until the final point.

The Gusties made quick work of the Yellowjackets in the third set after the frame started out close. With the score tied 7-7, the Black and Gold went on a 9-2 run en route to an 11-point victory.

Alyssa Taylor (Sr., Trimont, Minn.) led the Gusties with 10 kills on 15 attempts and two errors for an attack percentage of .533. Nora Holtan (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) posted 33 assists and Brittany Luethmers (Fy., Prior Lake, Minn.) tallied 12 digs. Gustavus hit .214 on the attack, while the Yellowjackets posted a pedestrian .013 attack percentage.

Gustavus returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at 7 p.m., Oct. 14 as it hosts Macalester College (13-7, 1-5 MIAC).
