ST. PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s soccer team will travel to Illinois this weekend, as it is slated to compete in a pair of games against Principia College and Greenville College on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

“We do not know much about the teams we are playing this weekend in truth,” said Coach Mike Middleton. “At the moment, it’s more about doing what we do well, rather than accommodating any tweaks into the system to cope with the opposition. That will come once we’ve fully established our shape and have achieved a level of consistency.”

Gustavus is one of two teams remaining in the MIAC that has yet to lose or tie, entering the weekend a perfect 3-0-0. The Gusties are fresh off of winning their own tournament, as they earned 2-0 and 3-0 victories over St. Norbert College and Viterbo University, respectively. Matt Jacobs (So., Mankato, Minn.) led Gustavus on the weekend with two goals and an assist, while goalkeeper Anders Severson (Lino Lakes, Minn.) kept the Gusties’ scoreless streak to begin the season alive.

Principia is 0-2-0 to begin its season after suffering setbacks to Monmouth and Rose Hulman to begin the year, managing only one goal in both games. Greenville is off to a 1-3-0 start, with its victory being a 9-1 win over Robert Morris-Springfield on September 3.

Gustavus has never faced Principia or Greenville, who are both members of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). The Gusties have faced SLIAC members Blackburn and Fontbonne, and are a combined 0-2-0 against each.

“It should be an exciting weekend,” said Middleton. “If we can manage to pull off two good results, we could be as high as No. 16 nationally. We’re 25th at present, and these are the games you have to take on if you want national recognition. It will be a tough challenge, but it’s exciting and I think the lads are looking forward to that challenge.”
