Track And Field Takes Part In MSU, Mankato Twilight Meet Posted on April 30th, 2015 by

Marit Sonnesyn won the 5000-meter run at Wednesday evening's MSU, Mankato Twilight Meet.

Mankato, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s and women’s track and field teams got a taste of mid-week competition at the Minnesota State University, Mankato Twilight Meet on Wednesday evening.

Gustavus individuals turned in a three first place finishes against a field made up mostly of Division III opponents. On the women’s side, Lydia Hayes (Fy., Decorah, Iowa) and Marit Sonnesyn (Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) led the way with a gold medal runs. Hayes won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.44, and Sonnesyn took the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:40.13. On the men’s side, Sean O’Connell (So., St. Peter, Minn.) won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.37.

Elizabeth Weiers (Sr., Le Center, Minn.) rounded out the team’s top performances in the hammer throw where she broke her own school record for the second straight meet. Weiers recorded a toss of 173-feet 11-inches to best her former record of 171-feet 10-inches posted at last weekend’s Drake Alternative.

The Gustavus track and field teams will be in action once more before the MIAC Championships set to take place on May 8-9 in St. Paul. This weekend, the Gusties will travel to St. Paul where they will take part in the Hamline Meet of the UnSaintly being held on Friday and Saturday.
