Men’s Golf Set For Saint John’s Spring Invitational This Weekend Posted on April 24th, 2015 by

The Gustavus men's golf team will compete in the Saint John's Spring Invite being held this weekend in St. Cloud and Monticello.

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s golf team is set to cap its regular season spring schedule this weekend at the Saint John’s University Spring Invitational being held at a pair of courses in central Minnesota.  Day one of the two-day meet will be held at the St. Cloud Country Club in St. Cloud on Saturday, April 25 and day two will be held at the Monticello Country Club in Monticello on Sunday, April 26.

The Gustavus men’s golf team will look to build on first place finish at its own Bobby Krig Invitational held last weekend at the Ridges at Sand Creek and Le Sueur Country Club.  The Gusties shared the podium and a piece of the Bobby Krig Trophy with Saint John’s after the two squads turned in identical three-round totals of 924 (+68).

Head Coach Scott Moe will look to rookie Chris Captain (Rochester, Minn.) and junior Matt Spier (Prior Lake, Minn.) to stay hot after what has been a solid spring for both student-athletes.  Captain led the Gusties at the Bobby Krig with a second place finish – his second top five tournament standing this season – after fifing a nine-over 223.  After a so-so opening day last weekend, Spier came roaring back in less than ideal weather conditions to finish in seventh place with a 16-over 230.  Captain is the team leader in stroke average at 76.4, while Spier ranks second at 77.2.

Last season’s Gustavus team finished its season with a seventh place standing at the Saint John’s Spring Invite.  The Gusties shot a 302 (+14) in what was a one-round shortened tournament.  Day two was cancelled because of heavy downpours in the region.

Saturday’s round will begin with a shotgun start at 12:00 p.m. and Sunday’s final round will get going at 9:00 a.m.  Live scoring for the weekend’s tournament will be provided by Saint John’s via the link below.
