St. Paul, Minn. – With the opportunity to compete one more time before the upcoming MIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships set to be held next weekend in Moorhead, the Gustavus Adolphus women scored 89 points to finish fourth at the Macalester College Kilt Classic held on Friday in the Leonard Center.
Macalester won the six-team meet with a score of 127.5, Hamline University finished second with a 113, and Bethel University took third with a 103.
The Gusties were led by a pair of pair of distance runners in Caitlin Fermoyle (Sr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Lauren Shurson (Jr., Chanhassen, Minn.). Fresh off receiving MIAC Athlete-of-the-Week honors for her performance in the 5,000-meter run last weekend, Fermoyle picked up a win for the fourth consecutive weekend. This time, however, Fermoyle out-ran the field in the mile, crossing the finish line in 5:13.00. Complimenting the senior with a win of her own was Shurson who won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:43.19.
Also on the track, Kaitlin Bembenek (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) and Courtney Branch (Jr., Minnetonka, Minn.) both provided second place finishes. Bembenek placed runner-up in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.86 and also added a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash in 27.29. Branch’s second place performance came in the 1,000-meter run where she crossed the line in 3:09.79.
Rounding out Gustavus’s top finishers on the track was Lydia Hayes (Fy., Decorah, Iowa) who took third in the 800-meter run (2:26.43).
Gustavus turned in three showings on the podium in the field events. Sarah Swanson (Jr., Fairbanks, Alaska) took third in the shot put with a throw of 40-feet 8.75-inches, and Elizabeth Weiers (Sr., Le Center, Minn.) placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 50-feet.
Kelsey Harms (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.) rounded out the group by taking third in the pole vault after clearing 10-feet 0.75-inches.
The 2015 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held on the campus of Concordia College on Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6. More detailed information about the meet can be found via the MIAC Championships Website via the link below.
