Collegeville, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus men’s indoor track and field team scored 116 points to finish in third place at the Saint John’s University Invitational held Saturday afternoon at the McNeely Spectrum. Saint John’s won the six-team meet with a 191, and Hamline University placed second with a 141.
Leading the Gusties with the squad’s top individual performance of the day was Scott Williams (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) who crossed the finish line in 8.76 to win the 60-meter hurdles.
In the 800-meter run, Ryley Sandberg (Fr., Alleman, Iowa) finished second with a time of 1:59.95, and Kyle Fredrickson (So., Victoria, Minn.) took third with a time of 2:00.20.
Rounding out Gustavus’s top finishers on the track was Evan Jones (So., Pella, Iowa) and Thomas Knobbe (So., West Des Moines, Iowa). Jones finished runner-up in the 3,000-meter run in 9:05.36, while Knobbe took second in the 5,000-meter run in 15:31.83.
In the field events, Gustavus benefitted from a second place toss in the weight throw by Jesse Scheiterlein (Sr., Sartell, Minn.), and second place leap in the high jump by Peter Schwartz (So., Kasson, Minn.). Scheiterlein recorded a distance of 53-feet 0.75-inches, and Schwartz cleared 5-feet 10-inches. David Hoien (So., Annandale, Minn.) rounded out the team’s top competitors with a third place effort in the pole vault, clearing 13-feet 9.25-inches.
The Gustavus track and field team will have one more warmup meet before the MIAC Indoor Championships set to take place on March 6-7 in Moorhead. That warmup meet will be the Macalester Kilt Classic held in St. Paul on Friday, Feb. 27.
